Gambian President Calls for Unity and Restraint Ahead of Presidential Elections

Gambian President Adama Barrow has called for peace, national unity, and restraint ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for 2026, in a New Year address in which he reviewed his government’s performance while acknowledging ongoing national, regional, and international challenges.

Barrow described 2025 as a pivotal year in the country’s history, marking the 60th anniversary of independence. He pointed to what he described as notable progress in democracy, the rule of law, and socio-economic development. He also highlighted advances in the implementation of the “Yiriwa” National Development Plan 2023–2027, particularly in major infrastructure projects, most notably road construction.

The president noted Gambia’s growing international presence, citing the country’s hosting of several international meetings and its active participation in regional and international organizations, including the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

On governance and security, Barrow said indicators and public opinion reflect overall stability, alongside progress in legislation, policymaking, and institutional reforms.

Regarding the upcoming presidential elections, he urged political actors and citizens to adhere to ethical politics, reject violence and hate speech, and respect human rights. He also called on journalists and social media users to help promote national values.

At the same time, the president acknowledged persistent challenges, including rising living costs, youth unemployment, irregular migration, crime, irregular rainfall during the 2025 agricultural season, and delays in adopting a new constitution.

Barrow also expressed concern over ongoing regional and global conflicts, stressing that 2026 would be a year of evaluation, with continued focus on infrastructure development, expanding access to energy, improving healthcare services, developing tourism, and strengthening institutions.

He concluded his address by thanking the Gambian people, development partners, and the diaspora, reaffirming his commitment to inclusivity, peace, stability, and national development.
