Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Traoré Assumes Presidency of the Alliance of Sahel States

Leaders of the Alliance of Sahel States concluded a 48-hour summit in Mali, attended by Burkina Faso’s President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Niger’s leader General Abdourahamane Tiani, and Mali’s President General Assimi Goïta.
The summit announced a package of joint projects aimed at strengthening political, economic, and security coordination and integration among the three countries, reflecting the alliance’s drive to consolidate regional partnership.
Proceedings moved at a rapid pace, with Captain Traoré—who arrived later—quickly joining his counterparts, underscoring the level of harmony and understanding among the alliance’s leaders.
The three leaders officially inaugurated the headquarters of the Alliance of Sahel States Television Channel, expected to serve as a unified media platform expressing the alliance’s positions and perspectives, with broadcasts to begin once operational arrangements are completed.
On the sidelines of the summit, Mali’s President Assimi Goïta emphasized broad consensus among the leaders on political and strategic issues, stressing the importance of coordinated voting within regional and international organizations. He noted that any support the alliance provides to other countries would be delivered collectively and based on consultation among its members.
Under the new leadership, the alliance is tasked with protecting civilians and confronting armed groups and insecurity across the region. Captain Ibrahim Traoré officially assumed the alliance’s rotating presidency as its new interim leader.
In closing remarks, Traoré acknowledged the difficulty of the current phase and the slower pace of progress compared to ambitions, while affirming that the alliance is on an upward trajectory toward achieving its goals.
